The Village Cemetery, Leicester Road

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Markfield's Leicester Road Cemetery opened in 1888.

The first burial was that of Mary Toon, aged 17. Her headstone was inscribed by Lindley of Coalville and reads "In loving memory of Mary the beloved and only daugher of John and Sarah Ann Toon who died June 21st 1888 aged 17 years. My days on earth they were but few; I was cut down like morning dew; short was my stay, long is my rest; God called me hence and I am blest; in the midst of life we are in death"

The History Group has access to the older burial records and can help to find inscriptions, take photos of memorials, etc. for people who are not able to visit the cemetery. The Group also has access to a survey of the gravestones and memorials in St Michael's Parish Church and can similarly take photos. Please use the Contact Us page to get in touch.

The History Group is gradually putting together a record of the memorials and inscriptions. The diagram (downloadable below) shows the blocks or sections into which the Cemetery is divided for record purposes. So far Sections A and C have been completed, which can be downloaded from the links below. The card (above) is in remembrance of George Gordon, interred on 4 July 1893, aged 36.
