Speaker: Brian Johnson

Brian is a popular local historian who has covered many aspects of Leicester's history.

At: Markfield Methodist Church, Main Street, Markfield LE67 9UU.

The three principal industries in Leicester were Boot and Shoe, Hosiery and Engineering. Many thousands were employed in these industries, particularly during and after the industrial revolution. By the 1950s, Leicester was considered the second richest city in Europe. The hosiery industry alone was earning the equivalent of over £100 million per year and accounting for a third of the country’s exports.

Many Leicester companies became household names and so even people who didn’t grow up in Leicester will still be familiar with them. Sadly, many of those companies are no longer with us.

But what of the other companies though, the ones that are still with us? Many have weathered the storms of recent years and are still performing well. Some are big names we regularly see advertised on the television, but not many people realise they have their origins here in Leicester.
